Siddhant Bhardwaj
I am a 16-year-old Inventor, Innovator, Diversity, Equity & Inclusion ambassador, tenacious volunteer, STEM mentor, and a passionate student of science and technology to create a positive impact for underserved communities and the fight against climate change.
My passion of the serving visually impaired community started to take shape when I noticed the acutely underserved visually impaired community in the age of technological advancement. Instead of sitting on the sidelines, I took action within my own realm. In 2018, I constructed Vision Assist 1.0, and continued to improve the solution with the award-winning device, Vision Assist 2.0, in 2019. Learning from the community feedback, the Vision Assist 2.0 was further enhanced and given a new name ODUS (Object Detection Universal System) in 2020, equipped with wireless functionality to provide better mobility and usability. In 2022, ODUS Plus featured cutting-edge computer vision AI and a resilient, user-friendly design.
California’s record setting wildfire season in 2020 burned an estimated 4.4 million acres, did not go unnoticed, and I set out again to find a solution. In 2021 I invented the multi-year award winning Project Regrow, for addressing climate change using drone technology for rapid seeding at scale. In 2022 the invention was further innovated upon and was featured on NBC CT’s Innovation awards.
In 2021, I was also named one of the three Student Board Members on the Board of Directors at the Connecticut Invention Convention (CIC), representing the 100,000 students who participant in the CIC program across the state. As a board member, I led a fundraising campaign to provide students with awards and opportunities resulting in raising $9,015, including a contribution from Google. I also co-founded the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion committee of the CIC Board of Directors. My initiatives resulted in creating a new curriculum for non-traditional learners, creating an equitable experience for participating students
In 2019, my work was recognized by the Connecticut Science & Engineering Fair Association for my inventions in Engineering, Physical Sciences, Applied Technology, & Computer Science. I was further recognized by the President of the United States for outstanding academic excellence through the President’s Education Awards Program.
The Connecticut Section of the Institute of Electrical & Electronics Engineers (IEEE) also recognized me for displaying curiosity, initiative, imagination & determination. The American Society of Safety Professionals, CT Valley Chapter, also recognized my invention, ODUS.
In 2021, Project Regrow was recognized by The Yale Club of Hartford with the Eli Whitney Award for outstanding achievement in the field of quality improvement. Additionally, at Invention Convention US Nationals presented by Raytheon Technologies, I was recognized as a US finalist.
Project Regrow was further recognized by The Stanley Black & Decker Sustainability award, The CT Environment Forum Environmental Innovation Award, The Link Family Award, Connecticut Science & Engineering Physical Sciences as well as Applied Technology Award.
In 2022, I was invited to Invention Convention US National for ODUS+. Project Regrow was awarded Xerox award for Innovation & Information Technology by the University of Rochester in recognition of outstanding achievement in the pursuit of innovative approaches and an appreciation for the possibilities of technology.
Additionally, the Connecticut Science & Engineering Fair Association recognized ODUS+ invention with Zepke award for the best use of electronics circuitry and Jon Stone memorial award for innovative engineering, additionally recognized as engineering medalist, 2nd place in applied technology as 2nd Honors in High School Physical Sciences
I believe that it’s important to cultivate young minds, because they have a vested interest in their future, the world’s future. It is critical that young minds use the abundant resources and advancements at our disposal to preserve and sustain the planet for us and the generations to come.
I am a firm believer in paying it forward, and have had the honor to mentor students at CHS through CHS Makerspace Club for which I am the founder and president. In my free time, I love to strum to the tune of my favorite band, the Foo Fighters on my guitar(s), cook with my family, and love to read with my siblings as a family book club over winter or summer break.
